Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education (CTCCE)
The
Center for Trauma and Critical Care Education was founded in
1981 to improve EMS education particularly as it pertained to
the management of the trauma patient. Thus began the first
Paramedic Program in Central Virginia and the only program at
the time affiliated with a University-based Medical Center.
The mission has grown since those early beginnings to include
other important trauma and acute care education programs. The
Center provides life support education (ATLS, ACLS, PALS,
PHTLS, ATCN, BLS, etc.) for all University housestaff and is a
major provider of life support education from Emporia to
Hanover County and New
Kent to Halifax-South Boston. The Center faculty was involved
with an EMS
education
program in Vladivostok in the mid 1990's helping to begin an
EMS Education Center to eastern Russia. More recently, the Center
partnered with the ITSDP to develop a prehospital trauma education program for
Ecuador. The Center is recognized as a leader
in EMS Education as well trauma
education for doctors, nurses and prehospital personnel
throught its offerings of Advanced Trauma Life Support,
Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses and Prehospital Trauma Life
Support. It's Paramedic Program was the first program in
Central Virginia to become Nationally Accredited. Between the
VCU Paramedic Program and the other course offerings, nearly
1500 people receive this critical, life-saving training each
