Clinical Aspects


Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) is central Virginia’s only level I State Designated Trauma Center. The Level I status emanates form the program’s diverse mission of clinical excellence, education, and research. VCUMC provides institutional commitment to leadership and community service. The mission of the Trauma Program is to serve the health care needs of the trauma patient through provisions of direct care and coordination of systems providing the delivery of multidisciplinary services to the severely injured patient. The program strives to achieve the following goals:
  • Offer quality evidence-based patient care to injured patient
  • Provide and facilitate education of multidisciplinary caregivers and assure that credentialing standards are maintained.
  • Facilitated quality improvement efforts as the optimal strategy in the resolution of individual and systems problems that impact the provisions of quality of care.
  • Provide for the conduct, critical analysis and implementation of research based findings to enhance the care provided for critical care, trauma and burn patients.
  • Develop and implement evidence based practice innovations to promote to injury prevention and control violence.
